June’s rainy weather has caused stagnant and pooling water in some areas, raising concerns about growing mosquito populations and the diseases they carry.
One of those diseases, West Nile virus, sickened 720 Americans last year, leading to 32 fatalities.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates older adults are at a higher risk for developing more serious central nervous system symptoms of West Nile.
“The most effective way to prevent West Nile virus is to stop mosquitoes from breeding and from biting,” said Dr. Patricia Quinlisk, medical director of the Iowa Department of Public Health.
Prevention measures include:
* Use an insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
* Avoid the peak mosquito biting times of dusk and dawn.
* Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes and socks whenever possible outdoors.
* Eliminate standing water around the home where mosquitoes could lay eggs. Empty water from buckets, cans, pool covers and pet water dishes. Change water in bird baths every three to four days.

When training, another rule of thumb to go by is to train each body part in the order of largest to smallest. A good example of a routine that follows these rules would be something like, Quadriceps and hamstrings (legs) on Monday, Back on Tuesday, Chest on Wednesday, shoulders on Thursday and biceps and triceps on Friday. By using this sample routine for a while you will be able to see how much rest each body part is getting and change the days around if need be.
It is best to choose a compound exercise for each body part that you can use to track your progress.
